Yesterday marked the beginning of Spring Break March 8-15th, 2014. We had more food than the law allowed. Great games. Great chaperones. Great park and a GREAT GOD. eVERYONE WAS WELCOME AS YOU CAN SEE FROM OUR SOJOURNER TRUTH ACADEMY FEATURED IMAGE.
The highlight of the day was LYRIC aka Constance Gordon, an advocate for ACLU. The Sistah is bad from the word 'go'. She taught the relevance of rap, hip hop to a struggling community. She brought the kids up to speed describing 'ghetto' to hood. Ghette where they ran the tracks thru the Bronx seperating and thereby accentuating minority impoverishment. Hood being present day projects and enclosed areas with a new name. In both instances WE OVERCAME WITH CREATIVITY, music, the arts, dance, poetry, canvas, street corner quartets....
Lyric taught the kids not to hate, but to activate. Take the anger, the bitterness, the strife, reconstruct it into a message palatable to the enemy that still MAKES THEM AWARE THERE IS A PROBLEM. The key is to do it in a nonthreatening manner so THEY CAN AND WILL HEAR YOU!!!
Lyric, and her sidekick puppy Hershey, taught the youth how to make a really lighthearted rap out of the fact that the schools discriminate against young blacks and teachers deliberately embellish and exacerbate the issue creating unnecessary problems for the children at home.
Explaining that they are the future for other children really blew their minds. Lyric instilled in them the need for community, self discipline and responsibility.
As Ice Cube says 'IT WAS A REALLY GOOD DAY'.
